Sally Field is a two-time Academy Award and three-time Emmy Award-winning actor who has portrayed dozens of iconic roles on both the large and small screens. In 2012, she was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 2015 she was honored. Funny thing is, Ms. Funicello really was the wholesome, God-loving angel she came across as, while Ms. Field was more identical to Sybil, the fictional character she starred as. THAT is the beauty and worth of Fields’ autobiography, “In Pieces.”.

The winner of two Academy Awards and three Primetime Emmy Awards, screen icon Sally Field is acclaimed for roles including a flying nun, a Depression-era Texas widow, a multiple-personality disorder sufferer, a union organizer, a soap queen, Spider-Man’s aunt, Forrest Gump’s mom, Mary Todd Lincoln, and a runaway bride hitchhiker. She is also a longtime advocate for human rights, has served since 2002 on the board of directors of the international women’s NGO Vital Voices, was honored by President Obama with the National Medal of Arts, and is an inductee into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In Pieces is a memoir of Field’s lonely but instructive childhood, her craft, and her most important roles: as a daughter, mother, and grandmother.

Production note: the sound is a bit distorted toward the beginning but it clarifies as the event continues.

When anyone goes through the kind of childhood abuse/neglect Field tactfully confesses it sets up a myriad of feelings, of self-doubt, being self-critical, low self-esteem. etc ad infinitum. Your accomplishments, the praise and adulation mean very little when you don't believe you areworthy of it. Each case is personal, as are the experiences in the person's journey to heal. The best answer I can give is that she is honest and feels sincere. I had a model that was molested by her stepfather and she thought she was ugly in spite of her success. Her reasoning was very convoluted; she blamed an eating disorder that led to her thin physique for her success, an eating disorder she used to have control over a life she felt she had no control over because of the molestations. She was a stunning woman that went on to marry the singer of a popular rock band. She heard repeatedly that she was beautiful and even took on the mannerisms of a beautiful woman, but never truly believed it. Point is, this is Sally's story and what the public saw was not the person but a persona. As I said in my review, I never felt Field was whining or pitying herself, but rather took responsibility for many events. Eventually, it is a story of strength and on healing. It was very profound and I have respect for her candor and tenacity. I have recommended the book to many different people for different reasons, and gave it 5*'s (something I don't do often).(less)

Couldn’t she have come up with at least a few good aspects of her life? Everyone has good and bad times. I got the feeling she just wanted people to feel sorry for her. (less)
